Abstract
Acidity and bioelectric potentials in the stomachs of lambs and yak calves under one month of age were investigated. Measurements of major parameters were taken before suckling and during six hours afterwards, and compared. The stomach acidity of two-day old lambs decreased significantly through the neutralizing effects of milk during the first hour after suckling, and starts to increase thereafter. However, the pH-level did not fall under 5.00, and low activity of pepsin and absence of hydrochloric acid were determined. Changes in these parameters correlate with the level of bioelectric potential, and the level and the amplitude of electrogastrogram (EGG) in the stomach disproportionally i.e. the latter parameters increase intensively during the first hour after suckling, and decrease when the level of acidity starts to recover thenceforth. Quantities of above parameters gradually increase along with the aging of lambs while the duration of the presence of hydrochloric acid reduces. Also, the quantitative decrease of these parameters after suckling becomes less intensive. The level of bioelectric potential, on the other hand, increases during the first hour after suckling. Measurements of the acidity, the level of bioelectric potential and the amplitude of the EGG in yak calves’ stomachs before and after suckling provided similar results as those measured in lambs’ stomachs. However, deviations of the bioelectric potential and the acidity in the stomach, and the protein degrading function of pepsin were stronger in lambs than in yak calves of same age.
